When to Test

If you have symptoms or know that you have been exposed to COVID-19, get tested to prevent disease spread.
It is important that you tell your close contacts so they can also be tested to protect the health of those around them and prevent further spread of the disease, especially those who are immunocompromised or have underlying health conditions.
Do not seek a COVID-19 test at an Emergency Room unless you are experiencing a medical emergency.
- It is important to help keep emergency departments from becoming overwhelmed with individuals seeking care for minor health issues so they can focus on the most urgent and life-threatening cases.
- People experiencing severe illness which can include trouble breathing, persistent pain or chest pressure, new confusion, inability to wake up or stay aware, or blue lips, should seek immediate medical care.
If you have tested positive and are considered high risk, please seek treatment immediately.

Get Free At-⁠Home COVID-⁠19 Tests Through Your Insurance

- Find out from your insurer if it provides direct coverage of over-the-counter COVID-19 tests.
- If you purchase an over-the-counter COVID-19 test from a pharmacy, store, or online retailer after January 15 and are charged, keep your receipt and submit a claim to your insurance company for reimbursement.
- The federal government is strongly incentivizing health plans and insurers to set up a network of locations where people with private health coverage will be able to order online or walk in and pick up at-home over-the-counter COVID-19 tests for free without having to submit for reimbursement.

FREE at-home tests will soon be available to residents

The State is working to provide Nevadans with easy and convenient access to COVID-19 testing from the comfort of their own home. This effort will help us accomplish that goal and help relieve some of the strain on our other testing systems.

The State has invested in convenient at-home COVID-19 tests using federal COVID relief funding to help meet demand
Test tests will help Nevadans understand the infection status of themselves or a household member due to exposure or symptoms. It will also help you plan for upcoming events and gatherings when you need to try and rule out illness.
Tests are being distributed throughout the State, with the bulk heading to Southern Nevada, including the health and fire districts, health care clinics, Chambers of Commerce, community organizations and more.
These tests should be used to help you understand if you or a member of your household are currently infected with COVID-19.
You should seek a test if you’ve been exposed, if you’re experiencing symptoms or if you have upcoming plans or an event to attend and you want to rule out illness.
If your test results are positive, you should self-isolate to limit spread among your family members, co-workers, and friends.
You should also inform your own contacts of exposure. These tests are not reported to the health departments, so there is no disease investigation or contact tracing done by public health officials.

If your home test is negative, but you’re experiencing symptoms we recommend you receive a PCR test to confirm your status.
If your at home test is positive, and you have no symptoms, we recommend you receive a PCR test to confirm your status.
These tests are in addition to at-home COVID tests the federal government is planning to send to Nevada as part of President Biden’s plan.
